Jersey City Rowhouse
For clients with a love of bold colour, this Jersey City Heights Rowhouse makeover gave a fresh new feel to kitchen, living spaces and bathrooms, while working sensitively within the existing layout of the house – all within our client’s budget.
The kitchen stayed in the same location but was reconfigured to make better use of the space, and updated to have a more modern feel, while embracing the Owners’ love of colour. The pendant lights were handmade in Rwanda.
The peninsula was rounded to add interest and also space in the small kitchen, while providing space for school morning breakfasts. The old window on the left was replaced with large double doors to let in more light, and make a connection to the outside.
On the opposite side of the kitchen we created a special nook for the Owner’s prized coffee machine, with plenty of space to store coffee cups and utensils nearby.
The fireplace had oddly been painted silver and was stripped back to reveal the stone underneath. We painted the brick to maintain some texture while lightening up the room.
In the dining room a painted detail is an Afro-contemporary take on a traditional crown moulding.
Previously open plan, the living area was divided from the entrance by bookshelves, providing a space for coats and shoes and protecting the seating area from cold winter air. The shelves were customized from Ikea to keep within budget, and help to integrate the large TV unobtrusively into the space.
Continuing the bold embrace of colour that was a theme in the project, the living room has an intense blue ceiling that feels like a summer sky.
The petite master bathroom again makes use of affordable big box store items, but combined in a way that looks polished and presentable.
The orange ceiling is one of the Owner’s favourite colours: here it helps to add interest to a neutral space and to make the very high ceiling feel more proportionate in this small room.
The glass tile pattern in the shower was inspired by an African mudcloth design.
The small bathroom still has plenty of storage, and a place to show off the Owner’s collection of vases and African decorative art.
